Volume 14
Employment Essentials Volume 14: How can you improve your onboarding to enhance your employee experience.
Remember your first day at your new job? Did you feel welcome? Was the company ready with all your tools and equipment? If so, great! Now more than ever, employers are taking a much-needed 2nd look at their onboarding. Afterall, turnover is highest within the 1st 90 days more so than any other period! But why? While there are many reasons, generally, it’s the feeling of familiarity, and belonging in the 1st 90 days that tie the individual to the company.
“People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care”
So, what can we do to set our new hires up for success and let them know they are a welcomed part of the team?
Today’s Masterclass Monday breaks down 4 low hanging fruit your team can implement quickly at low cost, with a high return! Taking the time to invest in your team will bear fruit exponentially. Consider this small prep time as building the necessary foundation your new hire will build their success upon.
Thorough Orientation
“Spare them SOME pf the boring HR talk!” At its core, an orientation is designed to inform and educate the new hire on Best Practices, protocols, procedures, code of conduct, etc. Be sure to also incorporate a story element to engage on an individual level with your team!Company History/Mission
What is our core product line or service?
How do we (the company) make a difference?
How did the company start and get to this point?
Compliance items
Illustrate the importance of a healthy working environment and the end benefits all members experience if we all adhere to code of conduct etc.
Swag bag
“Stopping advertising to save money is like stopping your watch to save time”
Show your new hire the company is invested in their success and that they are now an integral part of the team. Just like heading to your favorite team’s game and seeing all the team jerseys and hats, some company swag can make you feel part of the team with people you don’t know well yet.
Hats, shirts, coffee mugs, water canteens, lanyards, notepads, pens, etc.
Being presented with these items on your 1st day would make anyone feel appreciated!
Team Intro’s
While Day 1 means you can start getting to business right away, its important to know who you are doing business with. Set time for your new hire to meet key team members.
Direct Supervisor/manager
Division/department manager or director
HR support
Direct day to day colleagues
Shoutouts!
A simple acknowledgment goes a long way! You may have a marketing team that does company announcements, but in the event you don’t, a simple email, or a notice on the team bulletin board shows the new team member their was plenty of thought and effort that went into having them join the team!
While this may seem too simple and even insignificant, don’t let these small opportunities pass you by! You only get to make a first impression once!
FLAG is more than a staffing partner, our mission is to educate the world on the importance of showing everyone the love and respect they deserve in pursuit of employment, even on their 1st day of work!

Employee Insights Volume 14: Resume Fundamentals
Crazy to think, how a brief summary of your work history that we call a “resume”, can make or break your job search! While ideally you shouldn’t need your resume more than a handful of times in your working career, it’s important to have a strong one readily available if you happen to find yourself in the market again.
Treat your resume as a direct reflection of yourself and what you offer the employment market. While you may not see it, your resume is the first impression prospective employers get of you. The reality is that in the recruitment world, your resume has maybe 15-30 seconds at MOST to capture their attention! Which is why today’s Masterclass Monday is all about resume best practices to stand out as a top prospect to any employer.
It is better to have one and not need it, than to need one and not have one! With that said, let’s do it once, let’s do it right.

Resume Best Practices
Objective vs Subjective
While speaking on skills, focus on measurable items everyone can quantify and measure. This makes it very clear to the employer what you can and can’t do. It is easier to disagree with someone’s definition of Subjective skills like being a “good listener”.
Subjective Example:
Good listener: According to who?
Fast learner: Compared to who?
Team player: Based of what standards?
Objective Example:
Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook): Can be tested
5+ years of stand up forklift experience: Can be tested
Familiar with 240/480 volts: Can be tested
Context + Content
To add another layer of depth to your resume and cement your expertise, add context while explaining your roles and duties with a focus on the value added to the team. Surface level content doesn’t do justice to the impact your work has or highlight the level of diligence you executed with.
Example:
Process invoices daily- Average
Process upwards of 20+ invoices per day to maintain past due accounts within the net terms, mitigating late fees and penalties. – Context
Example 2
Operate a forklift- Average
Operate a Sit down/Stand up forklift for order picking, and shipping and receiving with an RF Scanner. – Context
Density
Consider adding additional details from your role that aren’t necessarily done on a daily basis. This helps round out your resume with tasks you may not have considered as relevant.
Daily functions- Daily core tasks
Weekly Functions: Cleanup functions
Monthly Functions: Month end reports
Quarterly Functions: Audits, reporting
Now your resume is ready to go to battle for you! Take some time to invest in your resume and incorporate these concepts for a stronger, faster return on your investment.
