Volume 10
Employment Essentials Volume 10: How can I improve my retention as an employer!
In today’s fast-paced competitive world, as employers our challenge is two-fold. Not only do we have to attract and hire great talent, but we must also go above and beyond in retaining them. With talent shortages all around coupled with our hyperconnected world, the chances that your employees are exposed to new, potentially better opportunities grow more and more every day. Despite all these changes and factors out of your control, its important to remember the old adage, “Control what you can control.”
So, what are those items we as employers can control? Today’s Masterclass focuses on some of the lower hanging fruit you can easily address to improve your retention. While there are many suggestions we can provide as a recruitment partner, the biggest thing a team can do is to be intentional and work together on such an important undertaking. Employee retention may be a simple topic to understand and dissect but addressing it is a labor-intensive project. Connect with your HR/management team regarding your new endeavor to make sure everyone is on the same page as other departments will be involved and required to have input.
Without further ado, let’s improve your retention! This is not a definitive list, there are many other robust tools and resources that may come at a cost to you. Be sure to discuss with your team what commitment level everyone can agree on before making any changes.
Onboarding-
Onboarding can be more than a boring formality! Your first impression as an employer can make a huge difference in an employee’s perception of your company, primarily, the culture, and how employees are treated. If you don’t take the time to ensure this is a positive experience for them, chances are you don’t do so in other areas of your operation.
Key items to go over during a retention driven onboarding:
Welcome Kit (company swag) if applicable + Company communications
Interactive team introductions
Company culture, Best Practices overview
Awards & Recognition
The importance of recognition cannot be understated! Yes, as employers, we expect our team to perform per the job requirements and duties. What we do not account for is for the other intangible value adds our employees display day in and day out! This can range from a positive attitude, a team player that goes above and beyond, training others, etc. These are things you can’t put a price on that pay dividends you did not invest in! while human capital is the predominate way of doing business, we must make sure our teams feel valued and appreciated, otherwise, someone else will.
Awards & recognitions can range from simple to more elaborate
Team shout outs! (during meetings, warmups, etc.)
1v1 lunches
Company Awards (Company Holiday events)
Evaluations/check ins
As an employee, one of the worst feelings is NOT knowing how you are doing and where you stand with the company. Regular check-ins can give your team the peace of mind they need to perform their jobs better as well as grant you the opportunity to have scheduled times to provide feedback, address concerns, and discuss the employees progress with the organization.
Allow the employee an opportunity to share how the role is evolving from their perspective.
Have regularly scheduled meeting times
Space them out as time progresses giving the employee more autonomy.
Staffing Partner
In times of need, staffing & recruiting teams become indispensable, even more so for those tougher to fill roles. A good staffing partner understands the nature of your business along with the intricacies and challenges that come with your particular industry.
